Dr. Ali passed away on Saturday 25 January 2014 from respiratory and other complications at the CMH, Dhaka Cantonment. He is the father of Dr. Reza Ali, Director of Emergency Medicine at the Blacktown and Mount Druit Hospitals in Sydney.
Dr. M. M. Ali had a distinguished medical career after finishing his Matriculation (School leaving examination) in 1939 and MBChB from Calcutta Medical College in 1947. After serving as House Surgeon in Dhaka Medical College and other colleges in Bangladesh he went to UK in 1954 to progress towards fellowship. He worked in different hospitals in England and Scotland and completed his FRCS (Edinburgh) in 1964.

The then Pakistan President Ayub Khan asked him to return to his home country. He was directly appointed as a General Surgeon in the Pakistan Army and posted in Dhaka. During 1952 language movement he treated the martyrs and in 1969 mass uprising saved Sgt. Fazlul Haque by removing bullets. As a reprisal he was transferred to an outback post in West Pakistan. He and his family were repatriated through the Red Crescent to Bangladesh after spending more than a year in a Prisoner Camp like conditions.

On his return he was placed as Chief Surgeon of Bangladesh Armed Forces in 1973. He helped set up the ‘Pongu Hospital’ 1973-83 targeting the disabled freedom fighters. Dr. Ali in his relentless effort to save lives carried out operations as long his fingers were nimble and he used to sew to retain the agility of his fingers. He believed that a doctor’s duty is to serve the cause of humanity.
